I still believe in title chances - Vettel - F1 News

F1 News - I still believe in title chances - Vettel

https://ift.tt/2OmIvv4

Sebastian Vettel has one victory in the past six races, with Lewis Hamilton winning the other five

Sebastian Vettel still believes in his title chances despite falling 50 points behind rival Lewis Hamilton.

The German's deficit following Hamilton's victory in Russia means even winning all the remaining races may not be enough for Vettel to be champion.

"I'm clever enough to know it's not getting easier if we lose points," said the 31-year-old Ferrari driver.

"It takes one DNF and all of a sudden things look different. Ideally two. You never know what happens."

There are five races left, starting with Japan on 7 October. Grands prix in the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi follow, with a maximum of 125 points available.

Vettel, who finished third behind Briton Hamilton and his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas in Sochi, added: "We need to stay on top of our game which maybe we haven't been completely this weekend.

"[We must] make sure that from where we are now we focus on winning the last races.

"It is not entirely in our hands. We need a bit of something to happen, but we need to make sure we are always there.

"So if it is a third we can get, or a win, we need to get it - to make sure we do everything.

"I still think if we win the next races we can put a lot of pressure on them and make something happen. It is not easy but I believe if everything goes well, we have a fair chance."

Hamilton 'most conflicted ever' over team orders - F1 News

F1 News - Hamilton 'most conflicted ever' over team orders

https://ift.tt/2y0vahL

Valtteri Bottas has yet to win race during the 2018 season

Lewis Hamilton says winning thanks to team orders left him feeling "the most conflicted I have ever been".

Mercedes ordered team-mate Valtteri Bottas to let Hamilton by in Russia after pressure from Hamilton's title rival Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton said: "The racer inside me wants it to be the other way around.

"The ruthless killer instinct inside me says: 'This is the way it should be, stop being so soft. This is the way it needs to be.'"

Hamilton's victory gives him a 50-point advantage over Ferrari driver Vettel in the championship with a maximum of only 125 available over the remaining five races.

But he said that it was "by far not the way I would ever want to win the race" and said the contrasting emotions brought about by his victory were "weird".

Hamilton said: "The team did an amazing job this weekend and everybody deserves the one-two we have.

"Ultimately it just wasn't the result I wanted. But it was the result the team wanted.

"The heads of the team are really nervous for these last races. If something happens - engine failure, a tyre blow-out, whatever it may be - and we lose the world championship by one or three points, they will look back and say: 'We are a team and we didn't work as a team'.

Russia was Hamilton's 70th victory in Formula 1 - but perhaps not his happiest

"Valtteri is not fighting for the world championship. I am. And if they hadn't take that decision, (team boss Toto Wolff) said, we wouldn't have been been able to live with ourselves.

"But on the racer's side it is hard. Valtteri was an ultimate gentleman. We will move past this collectively as a team and a big thank you to Valtteri for helping."

Mercedes' decision was backed by Vettel, who said: "Controversy for whatever reasons is more attractive than happy news and smiley faces.

"I don't think it is fair now asking them tough questions.

"What they did today and the way they played together as a team makes complete sense. It is a bit dull for the race but it makes sense.

"So it is not nice to ask them those difficult questions. For the team it doesn't make a difference who wins but for the drivers' championship it does, so everybody understands what they did today."

Bottas said the decision was "confusing" and that he was not prepared for it.

"I had the pace for victory and the ability this weekend," the Finn said.

The fight for a coveted fifth world title

"The team decided Lewis will win today and that's how it goes. He is fighting for the championship and I am not.

"I am a racer and I just want to win races. At the moment, it is a bit painful but I do it for the team. Hopefully better times in the future once we are again on equal terms, then maybe I can do something."

Bottas added that he expected the same thing to happen again if the two drivers are in the same positions again before the championship is decided.

Wolff said that the team made the call because Hamilton had blistered his tyres passing Vettel, after losing a place to the Ferrari at the pit stops because of a team error.

With damaged tyres, they were worried Hamilton could lose second place to Vettel, and having Bottas in between them acted as a buffer to protect Hamilton.

Wolff said: "Rationally it was the right call, but our sporting heart says no."

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 30 September 2018- Motorcycle News

Motorcycle News - Custom Bikes Of The Week: 30 September, 2018

https://ift.tt/2xQK9vm

The best cafe racers, scramblers and bobbers of the week
A wild BMW R nineT from Onehandmade, the CROIG Instagrammers get their mitts on a Street Cup, and the Bultaco Pursang from Easy Riders goes up for auction.

Triumph Street Cup cafe racer by CROIG
Triumph Street Cup by Croig If you are one of the millions of two-wheeled enthusiasts addicted to the ’Gram, you’re probably following @caferacersofinstagram. Run by David Chang and Andy Blashko, the feed has been a hotbed for custom cafes since its inception. But the ‘Motosota’ duo don’t just create content for social media—they get their hands dirty building bikes, too.

The latest creation to roll out of their shop is a fully-faired take on the Triumph Street Cup. Working with Triumph’s American mothership, the duo was limited on time—but was given keys to the accessories castle. A wish list was quickly submitted.

Triumph Street Cup cafe racer by CROIG
New Fox shocks have been fitted, a Vance & Hines high-pipe exhaust was secured, and the tail has been tidied, too. But the prettiest bits here aren’t the factory bolt-ons.

Working with a replica fairing for a CB350, team Croig needed to shave bits here and there to have everything line up just right. (The work around the lower engine looks absolutely spot on.) The brackets holding that fabulous glass in place also had to be fabbed up, but the mounting was kept nice and tight. [More]

BMW R nineT cafe racer by Onehandmade
BMW R nineT by Onehandmade In the custom world, not even a masterpiece is safe from revision. Tastes and trends change, and sometimes a build just needs that extra ten percent to take it from great to godly.

Three years ago, Wes called Onehandmade’s Beemer ‘one of the sharpest we’ve seen.’ It recently got a redux and man, it may now be the best. Period.

The lucky client who bought this bike has an even luckier son, who’d expressed interest in riding the beast. (No kidding?) But that meant revisions, to make it a touch easier to get on with.

BMW R nineT cafe racer by Onehandmade
The clip-ons up front were swapped for a set of bars mounted to a newly bolted up triple clamp, to neutralize ergonomics, and the old twin-pod filters have been binned in favor of a custom made singular intake that doesn’t interfere with knees in the breeze. An all-new exhaust, made of titanium, has also been welded up for a more raucous bark. And the girder look was adopted up front via a set of aluminum fork covers.

Aside from the front end, the biggest (and best) change aesthetically is the move to the M Power paint scheme. I dug the previous raw look, but the new white, blue and red livery classes this thing up incredibly well. [Onehandmade Facebook]

1969 BSA Thunderbolt flat tracker by Zoe David
Zoe David’s BSA Thunderbolt We’re all familiar with the addictions of moto-life around here. For most of us, all it took was that first hit: maybe a blast through a farmer’s field or maybe, like Normandy’s Zoe David, breathing life back into a dead machine.

Since resuscitating a 1954 Peugeot 155, the Frenchwoman has gone on to cement her moto-junkie status with this 1969 BSA Thunderbolt. It now sees equal time running around city streets and getting sideways on the flat tracks of Europe.

1969 BSA Thunderbolt flat tracker by Zoe David
Part bitsa-restoration and part unencumbered beauty, Zoe built the BSA into the bike she wanted. Which is why it rides on matched 19-inch wheels for the dirt oval, but also has an impeccably lacquered Spitfire tank. Forme et fonction are of equal import. Following that same theme, the original subframe has been replaced by new one modeled on a Trackmaster design.

Zoe also opted to rebuild the Thunderbolt’s original forks, while shaving near three inches off their height. Braking is now handled by a 1967 Triumph drums, and the muffler was once clamped to a Norton P11. Those changes helped her qualify for her first race at Wheels and Waves and notch a win at Dirtquake in UK. [More]

Custom Indian Scout Sixty by Motoshed
Indian Scout Sixty by Motoshed Like us, you’re probably waiting for news of Indian’s productionized FTR 1200, due to be revealed tomorrow. Meanwhile, feast your eyes on this long ‘n’ low custom Scout Sixty from MotoShed of Swansea, Wales.

The concept for ‘Roadrunner’ came from the desire to see what an under-seat exhaust would look like on the Scout. And those two new seat-warmers were by far the most complex part of this project.

Custom Indian Scout Sixty by Motoshed
Most of the wiring spaghetti, plus the battery and ECU, typically reside where the new cannons sit. So everything had to be redone, and re-routed. Peek a few inches south of the new Rizoma foot controls and you’ll see where most of that stuff now hides, highlighted by the blue hue of a Dynojet Power Vision CX performance tuner and data monitor module.

Custom Indian Scout Sixty by Motoshed
For the Scout’s new (and handmade) bodywork, MotoShed tapped CW Engineering. The nacelle, front fender and rear hugger (acting as a heat shield for the pipes) were all rolled from new sheet metal.

Custom Indian Scout Sixty by Motoshed
Suspension has been upgraded and ground clearance has increased too. This gives Roadrunner a lean angle befitting its more aggressive vibe, while still appearing factory fresh. It’s a tasteful build on a capable bike. I only wonder what stops a rider first: blown eardrums or roasted rump? [More]

The Easy Rider 1968 Bultaco Pursang
The Easy Rider 1968 Bultaco Pursang When you think of Peter Fonda and Easy Rider, the bike that undoubtedly occupies your grey matter is Captain America, the iconic chopper crafted by Cliff ‘Soney’ Vaughs. But before Wyatt and Billy hopped on their hogs and headed east, they met at La Contenta Bar in Taos, New Mexico. And Wyatt was riding this 1968 Bultaco Pursang.

This is the very bike that was used during the shoot. When filming wrapped, it was hustled back to its owner, and it stayed there.

The Easy Rider 1968 Bultaco Pursang
Recently the bike was restored and is now offered in ‘film used condition,’ which is fancy speak for saying it’s been refreshed—but not too much. Now it’s headed to auction, along with some other rare celebrity bikes, at this year’s Barber Fest next week.

Expectations are that this 250 MKII will find a new home for around US$60,000 to US$70,000. That’s a hefty sum, for sure—but it pales in comparison to the seven figures that ol’ Cap’n would fetch. And this one won’t shudder at a corner, either. [More]

Lewis Hamilton wins in Russia after team orders - F1 News

F1 News - Lewis Hamilton wins in Russia after team orders

https://ift.tt/2OmEQgN

Lewis Hamilton took a giant step towards a fifth world championship with victory in the Russian Grand Prix.

Hamilton benefited from team orders as Mercedes ordered his team-mate Valtteri Bottas to let him by at half distance to protect against rival Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton had to pass Vettel on track to get into a position to benefit from the orders after being passed at the pit stops.

And Vettel survived an investigation for driving dangerously while racing Hamilton.

Move over for Hamilton? All you need to know about Russia - F1 News

F1 News - Move over for Hamilton? All you need to know about Russia

https://ift.tt/2DDgGul

Listen to full commentary of the Russian Grand Prix from 12:00 BST on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

There are so many questions going into the Russian Grand Prix.

Can the Mercedes drivers on the front row fend off Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and prevent him slipstreaming past them from third place on the longest run to the first corner of the season?

Will Mercedes attempt to maximise Lewis Hamilton's championship prospects by employing team orders to ensure the Briton wins the race ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas, who beat him to pole?

How, for that matter, did Hamilton end up losing pole position to Bottas, after looking so dominant up to the final session of qualifying?

But almost certainly the most important question of all is, what on earth has happened to Ferrari's pace?

Are Ferrari beginning to fall apart?

For much of this season, Ferrari have had the fastest car. But something has happened to them in Russia - and perhaps, in hindsight, at the preceding race in Singapore, too.

In Singapore, they looked to be the pace-setters until Hamilton's blistering pole lap in final qualifying. The view there was that Ferrari had simply messed up their qualifying session and failed to get their tyres up to the proper working temperature.

But Russia raises another possibility. Mercedes have utterly dominated the weekend, and Ferrari have been nowhere, a good half-second off throughout.

So, is Mercedes' advantage new this weekend - in which case, where has it come from? Or did the Mercedes step forward come in Singapore - where ultimately Hamilton ended up with a similar margin - but it was disguised until qualifying?

Both teams arrived in Russia with major aerodynamic upgrades, focused on revised front wings and shapers at the front of the car.

So far, Mercedes' appears to have been the most effective.

Ferrari believe their car has problems in certain types of corners and say they are struggling particularly in Turns 16 and 17 towards the end of the lap, where the car is lacking rear grip.

They also believe Mercedes have made progress on tyre management - which tallies with the general perception that Ferrari are struggling to keep their tyres in good condition for an entire lap of Sochi.

Their lack of pace is a genuine concern - they expected to struggle in certain parts of the lap but not to be as far behind Mercedes as they are.

It will take more than this weekend to answer whether this reflects a general shift in the competitive order, but for Ferrari's title hopes it is bad news indeed. Vettel is 40 points behind Hamilton. If he does not make up ground on Sunday, it could be effectively all over bar the shouting.

Mercedes dominate the winners stats in Sochi - but will Bottas be allowed to fight for a second career victory in Russia?

A Mercedes quandary

Bottas took pole largely because Hamilton made errors in the middle sector on both his laps in the final part of qualifying.

"Valtteri has been driving well all year," Hamilton said. "I am happy for him. He did a great job and you can't get it perfect every time. I am only human. There is still a long way to go (in the race). The important thing is to try to convert that and make sure we hold those positions at least."

But "those positions" do not necessarily suit Mercedes' purposes. Or at least not in that order.

Hamilton's advantage over Vettel in the championship is substantial but Mercedes may feel the need to press home their advantage while they can.

If Bottas and Hamilton do get into the first corner with the Finn in the lead, the temptation to reverse their positions at some point in the race will undoubtedly be there.

Hamilton said he would "never" ask that of a team.

"We will be racing, but also as team-mates," he said. "So as to not do something silly towards each other. And then it is a train following whoever is in front and try to hold on to position."

But Bottas is aware of the possibility. "My approach to the race is definitely just trying to win," he said. "You can't have any other goal, starting from the pole. But of course we're here as a team. We're fighting for both championships.

"Obviously Lewis is leading the championship with a bit of a gap to Sebastian and a very big gap to me, so always need to keep those things in mind."

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff is aware of the pros and cons.

Wolff said: "It was important for Valtteri to bounce back and regain some confidence but we are not in the part of the season where I particularly enjoy two Mercedes racing each there in the front. As much as I hate to say that as a race fan. You need to calculate a little bit more at this stage."

He said "none of us likes" team orders.

"It is a very tricky decision and we will be discussing it with them tomorrow morning and we will come to a solution with the buy-in of everybody."

Can Vettel win the start?

Vettel is 40 points behind Hamilton in the drivers' championship

Ferrari's pace may have been lacking so far this weekend, but a win is not necessarily out of the question.

The red cars are consistently fast starters - although Mercedes have improved in this area noticeably in recent races - and Vettel will think he has a decent chance of slipstreaming past the Mercedes into the braking zone at Turn Two.

Vettel said: "I was joking with Valtteri earlier that he should remember what happened last year where he was third, I was on pole. But you never know. It depends on the start. It depends on so many things. So, we will see.

"We will go racing and try to do, obviously, our best. It's been a bit of a tricky one for us. We didn't have the pace by quite a big gap, which is a surprise. But it is like this and we will fight as much as we can."

But do Ferrari have the pace to stay ahead even if Vettel does take the lead?

"I am quite positive," Vettel said. "I hope we can be a lot closer. If we are, we should have a good battle. If we are not, it will be bit less entertaining. If we can get ahead, we have a good chance but it is still a long race. If they are they much faster it will be difficult but we will try."

Have Renault pulled a blinder?

The second part of qualifying, in which drivers compete to make it into the top 10 shoot-out, turned into a bit of a farce when five of the 15 cars failed to take part, making the "knock-out" element of it rather redundant.

Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, and Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly, were never going to take part - they have grid penalties for excessive engine usage and running after the first session made no sense.

But the other two non-runners were more intriguing.

Renault chose to keep Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz in the pits in an attempt to give themselves an advantage in the race - knowing the grid penalties for Ricciardo, Verstappen and Gasly would mean they start 11th and 12th.

The three other midfield teams in Q2 - Haas, Force India and Sauber - all chose to run. And so all their drivers made it into the top 10.

But in doing so, they are now committed to starting the race on the hyper-soft tyre, as the rules dictate that those in the top 10 have to start on the tyre with which they set their fastest time in Q2. Those outside the top 10 have free tyre choice.

The hyper-soft is fast over one lap, but quickly degrades, making it a poor race tyre - which is why Mercedes and Ferrari successfully attempted to make it through Q2 on the more durable ultra-soft.

Renault clearly learned from the last race in Singapore, where McLaren's Fernando Alonso, who qualified 11th, won the battle for best of the rest by starting on a harder tyre than those immediately ahead of him, including Hulkenberg, both Force Indias and a Haas.

The problem for Haas, Sauber and Force India is that their cars will be very slow in the first stint, and risk being leapfrogged during the pit-stop period as a result.

Esteban Ocon, who qualified his Force India sixth, said: "It will be really interesting to see how the hyper-softs perform in the race. We know there will be a lot of cars further back on the ultra-softs.

"Let's see how the strategies unfold, but I believe we can convert our strong performance into a good race result."

Hulkenberg called Renault's strategy "wise". But sporting director Alan Permane said that winning the midfield battle was far from a foregone conclusion.

"Our approach will be to gain places when those ahead of us have to pit early because of the short performance life of the hyper-soft tyres," he said. "This will benefit us early in the race. However, we still expect a very tight battle."

The comeback Kvyat

"I never gave up hope of racing again, I am still young and I have kept in good shape to always be prepared in case another opportunity presented itself."

Off track, the weekend has been dominated by Red Bull's decision to re-employ Russian Daniil Kvyat at their junior team Toro Rosso next year.

This was an open secret well before it was announced on Saturday morning.

It's a fascinating story because the Russian's Red Bull contract was terminated at the end of 2017 - after he had been first demoted from the senior team to the junior one four races into the 2016 season, then dropped from Toro Rosso after Singapore in 2017, reinstated for a race when they found themselves short of a driver for the US Grand Prix and dropped again.

Kvyat was dropped because Red Bull's motorsport chief Helmut Marko felt he was never going to be put back into the main team - so why keep him?

But while Toro Rosso exists, someone has to drive the cars, and Marko felt it was worth giving him another chance.

Basically, Red Bull have found themselves in a pickle because their junior driver programme has run out of drivers.

Following Daniel Ricciardo's move to Renault for 2018, Pierre Gasly has been promoted to Red Bull. But there is no-one ready to step into the junior team, which exists solely to blood drivers for Red Bull.

The closest is Briton Dan Ticktum, who races in Formula Three, but he won't have enough FIA licence points for an F1 drive at the end of this season, and in any case Red Bull team boss Christian Horner says he is "not ready".

As Horner put it: "I don't think he'd fully dealt with 2016. He's done that now, he's grown as a person, time for reflection, grown in experience, done a good job for Ferrari (as development driver) this year and it will be interesting to see what he can do in the Toro Rosso.

"He just has that little more experience now. He could be quick but was sometimes a little erratic. Hopefully you will see a much more rounded driver."

That still leaves another Toro Rosso seat to fill. Brendon Hartley, the incumbent, is not in Marko's good books and looks on rocky ground. The favourite is ex-Mercedes protege Pascal Wehrlein, who Marko says he has talked to, but is on "a long list".

Quite who else is on this list that is so long that Toro Rosso had to go back to a driver they sacked less than 12 months ago to fill one of their empty seats remains unclear.

Toto Green Honda CBX550- Motorcycle News

Motorcycle News - Toto Green – Honda CBX550

https://ift.tt/2QiXG5L

During the sports bike boom of the 1980s Japanese motorcycle manufacturers were in their prime. In 1982 Honda released a new addition to their middleweight sports category, the CBX550. Powered by their latest DOHC inline 4 the CBX was in many ways the successor of Honda’s much loved CB 400 Four. The snaking 4-into-2 exhaust is the biggest giveaway, but that’s where the similarities ended. Styling was all eighties with a Bol d’Or inspired paint scheme and Honda’s iconic ComStar wheels. As was the case in the 80s manufacturers also added “groundbreaking” technology to their new models, and the CBX was no exception.

Over 30000 People Converge For Moto Guzzi Open House 2018- Motorcycle News

Motorcycle News - Over 30,000 People Converge For Moto Guzzi Open House 2018

https://ift.tt/2DxQqRS

Italians are nothing if not passionate, and the Guzzisti faithful definitely fall into that group.

Begin press release:

The record Open House 2018 attendance is a sign of the passion Guzzisti have for Moto Guzzi, one of the most noble and beloved brands in the world. Thirty thousand enthusiasts, many strictly in the saddle, arrived from all over the globe at the historic Moto Guzzi plant in Mandello del Lario, where all Moto Guzzi bikes have been built since 1921.

Almost one hundred years after its birth, Moto Guzzi is in its second youth, increasingly catalysing the interest and popularity of different generations that recognise values such as authenticity, character and great skill in creating unique motorcycles. Like the new Moto Guzzi V85 TT, on display for the first time in its definitive version, with success demonstrated, not only by the enthusiastic comments of the public, but also by the more than one thousand bookings for a test ride (for which fans can still pre-register online at the Moto Guzzi website).

The other Moto Guzzi gem that was unveiled for the first time ever was also popular and the subject of many photographs: the V9 Bobber Sport, a more aggressive and refined version of the already popular custom from Mandello, enhanced by numerous prestigious details, available for purchase from late October.

The 2018 edition of the Open House had more activities for the public than ever before, starting with the tours of the production lines. No less interesting was the Moto Guzzi Museum that houses more than 150 motorcycles, from the 1919 GP prototype to the magnificent MGS-01, as well as the first production motorcycle of 1921, the “Normale”.

At the centre of the Moto Guzzi Village, in the beating heart of the plant, music alternated with other forms of entertainment, such as the talk show where the V85 TT managers explained the details of its inception. Also on display were a few of the magnificent specials built by Filippo Barbacane of Rossopuro Workshops. This year, refreshments were once again ensured by Street Food, thanks to the presence of five mini trucks capable of turning out gourmet quality dishes with a wide selection based on the best tradition of Italian cuisine.

The most popular music was the melody created by the V-twin engines in the fleet of fifty motorcycles that were available for more than 800 test rides taken astride the current Moto Guzzi range models. One protagonist of the test rides was the V7 III Limited, the latest special version of the “seven-fifty” from Mandello. The sense of belonging that the big Moto Guzzi family inspires is confirmed by the official The Clan community, which has surpassed 30,000 members for whom Moto Guzzi reserved special and exclusive treatment for the Open House. Registration is always open online at www.theclan.motoguzzi.com.

This concluded the three-day celebration dedicated to the most beautiful Italian bikes. Special thanks go out to the Municipality of Mandello del Lario which managed the activities outside the factory during Moto Guzzi Open House 2018.
