Motorcycle News - Boxer-Engined BMW Cruiser Spotted in Germany
https://ift.tt/2U2EOhP German website Motorrad has published a photograph of what appears to be a BMW bagger powered by a large Boxer engine has been spotted undergoing tests on public roads. The engine is believed to be based on the prototype “R18” engine that BMW showcased in December in the one-off “Departed” concept by Japanese builder Custom Works Zon (pictured above). The single photo (visit Motorrad to view it) is quite dark and appears to have been shot from a moving car, but it very clearly shows Boxer-engined bagger with a large fairing and a bunch of testing equipment. While there’s no obvious badging on this test bike, the engine configuration and the location (Germany) all suggest we’re looking at BMW’s new R18 cruiser platform. The big clue for us is that light gray shape behind the rider’s foot and below Motorrad’s watermark. The shape matches the area on the prototype engine where the drive shaft exits the transmission. When BMW first announced the prototype engine, the manufacturer said it was completely new, used air and oil cooling and had pushrods running along the top of the cylinders. No displacement was explicitly mentioned, but the “R18” on the back of the seat hints at around 1800cc. We can’t see the pushrods in the photos but Motorrad does confirm the cylinders are air-cooled and quite large. Motorrad also suggests BMW may be tinkering with ways to give the flat-Twin a V-Twin sound. When the prototype was first shown, BMW said it would provide more information about the engine and it’s possible intended uses at a later date. Motorrad’s photo suggests it may first appear in a bagger, and possibly as soon as later this year. Go back to the photo of the concept at the top of the page and note the K1600B bagger conspicuously placed in the top corner. Coincidence? We think not. F1 News - Formula 1's Netflix series Drive to Survive: What we learned
https://ift.tt/2UeVv95 Formula 1: Drive to Survive is a 10-episode Netflix series, a behind-the-scenes documentary that at its launch earlier this year promised to give "exclusive and intimate access to the greatest racing championship in the world". Designed for both die-hard fans and newcomers to the sport, it's a fly-on-the-wall experience spotlighting the drama and politics in F1. But just how far behind the scenes did it actually go? It's like a Premier League documentary without the top sixA problem with the series from the outset is that the sport's two top teams, Ferrari and Mercedes, declined to be involved. That's clearly disappointing, since the rivalry between them is one of the biggest focus points in the sport. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the team's involvement in the documentary would have been a distraction, "especially also if our main competitor was not doing it". Could Ferrari and Mercedes not just have sat down and agreed to get involved and each be equally distracted? It shows Gunther Steiner's 'David Brent' management style is box officeLuckily, there's enough sub-plots brought to life to keep it interesting in the absence of Ferrari and Mercedes. Throughout the series, Gunther Steiner is highlighted for his harsh yet amusing method of managing the Haas team. It's a peculiar management style - think David Brent in The Office. In episode seven, Haas driver Romain Grosjean is having a rough time. Steiner has had enough and takes his frustrations out at a Haas team dinner. Standing to address the team, Steiner says: "Maybe Romain didn't want to come because he had no points. Or maybe I didn't invite him because he doesn't deserve any food." Their relationship worsens through the season to the point where, after another crash, Grosjean sits against the wall and sobs. Seconds later we see Steiner simmering on the pit wall. "All this bad luck is draining me," says Grosjean. "In Formula 1 you do feel lonely sometimes. There are not many people who can understand what you're going through, you can be a hero to zero in five seconds." But Steiner is not interested: "Just stop whinging. Good guys never win…" It makes big crashes even more dramaticThe series dramatises the biggest crashes, such as Nico Hulkenberg's flip after catching the wheel of Grosjean (who else?) in Abu Dhabi. After being sent airborne into the barriers, the German is left upside down "hanging like a cow". Seconds later his Renault catches fire. The shock of the moment is cleverly drawn out - even if viewers already know the outcome - with super slow-mo effects, long pauses, and scene cuts between team members, spectators, friends and family as they await his response on the radio. It's a moment that underlines the ever-present jeopardy to the sport, highlighting the repercussions that just one small one mistake has on the driver and the team. It shows the sport's human sideEveryone has a story, and there are hundreds of them in Formula 1. Daniel Ricciardo's is covered in episode one, beginning in Perth, Australia where the Red Bull man, alongside his parents, talks about where it all started for him, before he took off to Europe to chase his dream. "How could we not let him go?" says his mother Grace, who goes to the majority of the grands prix and always prays for a safe race. You really feel for the sacrifices people make to get to F1. And in Ricciardo's case they have been rewarded - no more so than when we witness his victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, where he gracefully falls into the team's swimming pool in celebration. As it transpires, 2018 is seismic year for Ricciardo, who during the course of the campaign takes the decision to jump ship from Red Bull to join Renault. It's a move he takes months to ponder, and the documentary is there every step of the way. #F1 via BBC Sport - Formula 1 https://ift.tt/OHg7x6 March 29, 2019 at 04:15PM

Motorcycle News - The Keeper: Gasoline builds a BMW R series for Cam Elkins
https://ift.tt/1elNyER
After several years filming other people’s bikes, Cam decided it was time to get a custom of his own. He selected a 1986 BMW R65.
“And when I first got into the cafe racer scene, it was the custom R80s and R65s that tended to catch my eye. So in short, it’s been a dream for a long time.”
Cam got to know Jason Leppa and technician Sean Taylor at Gasoline while filming a promo video for their custom Harley Sportster, the A-15. So when he’d saved up enough to buy the R65 and put some money toward customizing, he knew whom to call.
“The brief was to build a forever bike,” says Gasoline’s Jason Leppa. “One with timeless style and clean lines, with modern controls and handling.”
To counter the age of the R65, Gasoline started by dismantling the original engine and gearbox. They vapor blasted and rebuilt the drivetrain with all new bearings, seals and gaskets, and then restored and powder coated the final drive unit.
The get the stance right, the front suspension has been lowered 40mm and the rear raised 50mm, with the help of a new shock.
Purpose Built Moto supplied the small profile headlight (and control unit) to complete the modern retro aesthetic.
And there’s more German engineering in the shape of discreet Kellermann brake and signal lights.
It’s one of those almost impossibly clean builds, with paint to match—a deep royal blue and a subtle matte grey, colors with a clear link to BMW’s history.
The effort was worth it, and reflected in the name of the bike: The Keeper. “It preserves its 1980s history, but will be ridden well into the future,” says Jason.
The rest of us will have to drool over this (very fine) photoset instead. Gasoline | Facebook | Instagram | Images by Rob Hamilton Motorcycles via Bike EXIF http://www.bikeexif.com March 29, 2019 at 12:10PM

Motorcycle News - What lurks beneath – Ellaspede Ducati 848
https://ift.tt/2U5imo0 Is it Ducati 748/749 with bigger muscles or a trimmed down 1098? The Ducati 848 was a new bike in the Italians lineup for 2008 and we’ve found that 10 years later it might just be one of the perfect donor bikes for a custom build. When it was released the Ducati 848 was lighter and more powerful than the 748/749, but it wasn’t as ‘hard-edged’ as the smaller bikes or as aggressive as the bigger 1098. Ducati had designed it to be an ‘easy to ride’ superbike capable of enticing riders from Japanese super sports or bringing new riders into this market. They even swapped out the noisy dry clutch in favour of a wet clutch system. Motorcycles via Return of the Cafe Racers https://ift.tt/2M9riRb March 29, 2019 at 02:07AM |
