Motorcycle News - How to turn the Ducati Scrambler into a tracker
https://ift.tt/2yQZ7EN
It looks like Ducati is now digging deeper into flat track territory: it’s commissioned a pair of flat track-style Scramblers from one of our favorite French builders, Bad Winners.
At the Wheels & Waves festival earlier this month, the bikes pulled in the crowds and took pole position on Ducati’s ‘Land Of Joy’ stand. We’re not surprised: we reckon the stock Scramblers are good-looking bikes, but Walid has lifted them to a whole new level.
The suspension is stock, however—but should work reasonably well on the track. Most Scrambler owners would call the ride ‘firm’ anyway, and find it more comfortable when carrying a pillion.
The engine internals are standard, but K&N filters now handle the intake side and there’s a Termignoni racing exhaust on the other end. A remapped ECU takes advantage of the improved breathing, and the bike now records 83 hp on the dyno—up ten horses on the original. A Scrambler 1100 swingarm now helps get the power down smoothly.
“The idea was to use the line of the Scrambler’s tiny frame,” Walid says. “The bike is ‘tight’ and I didn’t want the usual flat track design. I wanted a twist of MotoGP style—and that’s how I arrived at the tail design.”
It’s almost too pretty to race. But race it did: at the Wheels & Waves festival earlier this month, Zoe David of Atelier Chatokhine gunned the 800 off the start line in the El Rollo series and qualified third. Unfortunately the race itself was red flagged, but the bike showed promise—enough for there to be talk of developing it for a full series of flat track racing in 2019.
This one’s road legal, with the front brake intact. “The idea for this one was to show what we can do with the Scrambler 1100 without doing a big build, and just using plug-and-play parts,” says Walid.
The huge stock muffler is gone, replaced by a short and sweet silencer, hooked up to a custom stainless steel pipe that hugs the line of the rear subframe.
The best news of all? Bad Winners will be releasing kits in October this year, so Scrambler owners can give their bikes a dash of flat track style. There’ll be road legal kits for both the 800 and 1100 Ducatis, and a race kit for the 800 only.

Motorcycle News - Years in the Making – Yamaha TRX850 Café Racer
https://ift.tt/2N5y6QN Jonny’s been on or around bikes since he was 3 years old on his families farm. He’s worked in the motorcycle industry, been a daily commuter for most of his life and now even competes in club level racing. “I’ve always had an interest in engineering and the world of custom motorcycles,” he says. “It was only a matter of time before I’d turn my hand to building a cafe racer my way.” It was on a trip to Italy where he found the inspiration for his build. During his time in Verona, he happened upon the workshop of custom bike builder Mr. Martini. While he was there he spotted one of Martini’s ‘Jerolamo’ builds and instantly knew he had to build one himself. Martini’s Jerolamos are modern bikes with bare steel subframes, retro-styled saddles and an unmistakable cafe racer vibe, a recipe perfectly suited to Jonny’s taste. It was just a matter of finding a suitable donor. “Trying to pick the right bike was hard. Motorcycles that made it to my hit list had to be reliable (so Japanese), had to have a basic chassis, had to have some character and had to be something that people hadn’t really customized properly before.” Jonny’s search led him to Yamaha’s mid-nineties Ducati challenger, the TRX850. Despite never quite achieving Yamaha’s goal of knocking the air-cooled Italian middleweights of their perch, the TRX850 received decent reviews and satisfied Jonny’s list of requirements. The 850cc parallel twin had plenty of character and was as reliable as any bike to roll out of Yamaha’s factory. The trellis style tubular frame presented very well and, most importantly, he was yet to see anyone do a decent job customizing one. Once Jonny secured his donor bike he began the arduous task of scouring the internet for appropriate parts. This was also so the perfect opportunity to have the bike’s engine overhauled so he dropped it off with Grant at Coatsworth motorcycles for a complete top to bottom rebuild. Along with simply wanting the engine to run like new Jonny was keen to unlock some of the Parallel twins potential so he placed an order for ‘lots of torque’ and left the engine in Grant’s capable hands. During the rebuild of the TRX engine, Grant installed a set of Aries pistons to bump capacity up to 878cc. He fit new rods, ported the heads, installed lightweight custom billet cams and all new gaskets, bearings, and fasteners. The engines exterior was also given a good clean and fresh paint to have it looking as good as it would now perform. For fuel delivery, Grant replaced the stock carbs with a pair of Keihin FCR items while at the exhaust end of the cycle he fit a custom lobster tail set of headers. An Akrapovic muffler rounds the exhaust system off while a programmable ignition makes the most out the new setup. “Grant’s attention to detail and quality of workmanship is second to none. The result was well above my expectations, with loads of grunt down low and a midrange that pulls like a train. It also now makes a sound that will make any bike enthusiast go weak at the knees!” With the engine sorted Jonny turned his attention to the frame. After studying the shape of the bike and its bodywork he set about modifying the fuel tank and subframe to achieve the look he was after. The new subframe was constructed from stainless steel and bolted onto the existing framework. The original tank was also modified just enough to suit his design without losing its basic shape. “The look I ended up with is exactly what I was after, a sharp aggressive stance with a timeless look,” Jonny says. The TRX has also received a comprehensive rewire in the hands of Luke at Geelong’s Gauge Works. The new system utilizes a Motogadget M-unit Blue that controls the bikes electrics and gives it Bluetooth functionality. “Now all I have to do is walk up to the bike, my phone connects, I hit the starter button and I’m away. Then when I get off and walk away the bike turns off and the alarm is set. A truly amazing piece of tech.” The suspension set up on his TRX was also a carefully considered modification. As a racer having the Yamaha handle properly was of the utmost importance so all of its original components have been upgraded. The gold anodized fork legs are fully adjustable Ohlins items mounted using a set of one-off CNC milled triple clamps. Then, at the rear, there’s a matching Ohlins TTX shock that was transplanted from an R6. As with any custom application, Jonny ran into issue fitting the mono shock. Along with the new shock we wanted to fit the bike with a Yamaha YZF 750 swingarm and Honda CBR1000rr wheels; a configuration that left the shock 56mm short of its target. Thankfully Daz at Race Center was able to machine a longer shaft for the shock and install a custom spring to make up the shortfall without sacrificing any performance. During the 4 year build, Jonny spent a lot of time figuring out ways to get all the different parts he’d sourced to work together. He says if you look closely you’d find countless one-off machined brackets, spacers and parts that he had to fabricate from scratch. The results speak for themselves and have lead to Jonny having to speak to a lot of strangers on the street. “I get countless people stopping me to talk about the bike. And it’s not until they really stop and look closely, that they can see the countless hours that have gone into the bike.” If that’s not a clear indication of a good build I don’t know what is. F1 News - Austrian Grand Prix: Pick your top three drivers in Spielberg
https://ift.tt/2KbMyce After a 10-year absence from the calendar, the French Grand Prix injected some 'va-va-voom' back into the season. Mayhem on the first lap saw Sebastian Vettel slide into the back of Valtteri Bottas, sending both cars into a spin on the dizzying red and blue track of Paul Ricard. Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton took full advantage - along with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who turned fourth into second - to claim his third win of the season. Hamilton now takes a 14-point lead in the championship to Spielberg for the second of Formula 1's first ever triple header - France, Austria and the British Grand Prix all within a week of each other. At the Red Bull Ring 12 months ago, it was Bottas who was celebrating a dominate display, the Finn just holding on after a last-ditch attack from the Ferrari of Vettel. Motorcycle News - 2019 KTM 390 Adventure Spy Photos
https://ift.tt/2tySL7F This just in from the We Knew It Was Coming But Couldn’t Prove It Department: The KTM 390 Adventure is being developed for the 2019 model year. Now, let’s see what the spy shots have to tell us. The Austrians haven’t said anything official, but an executive of KTM’s Indian partner, Bajaj Auto, let slip to the press that the 390 Adventure was coming. “KTM is a niche brand for a select few,” says Amit Nandi, Bajaj senior vice president in charge of KTM’s Indian operations. “With the 390 Adventure we would be making our long awaited entry into the niche premium dual-sport segment which is a very apt segment for Indian roads.” Not surprisingly, the engine looks unchanged from the 390 Duke. What we can see is that the radiator has an enlarged shroud although the radiator itself looks unchanged. The exhaust plumbing has been rerouted under the engine, and the muffler has a slightly less triangular shape. We find it troubling that no skid plate is visible in the photos since the header is now extremely vulnerable, as is the rest of the engine. Given that the 390 engine already had a pretty broad, flat power curve, we don’t anticipate any real changes to the power delivery other than the EFI updates that are required by the new exhaust system. Stylistically, the 390 Adventure retains much of the family resemblance to the Duke with a few notable differences. First, the headlight nacelle is much larger, looking more like the 790 Adventure, with a portion that extends almost to the top edge of the TFT display (an item we expect to mirror the 2019 instrumentation on the Duke). Mounted on top of the nacelle is an abbreviated windscreen to redirect some of the wind blast during long rides. Similarly, a pair of clear polycarbonate wings have sprouted below the dual headlights; both the windscreen and wings are similar in shape to those found on the 790 Adventure R. Absent, however, is the 790’s motocross-style fender, with KTM opting for a tire-hugging design instead. The 390 Adventure also does not appear to have the enlarged lower section in the fuel tank on the larger model. First Look At The 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R In a break with the 390 Duke’s appearance, the entire trellis rear subframe has been covered with plastic bodywork. A close examination of the rear bodywork reveals a flatter profile and notches that look as if they could be used to mount hard bags – though the notches are oddly close together. Having optional saddlebags available would explain why the muffler’s shape was made flatter on the outboard side, too. We would also expect that the rear subframe was beefed up to handle the extra weight that saddlebags and a passenger would add. Further, the rear of the bike looks longer than on the Duke. What portions of the main frame that remain visible appear to be unchanged from the 390 Duke. With regards to the 390 Adventure’s dirt-worthiness, the same inverted fork appears to be used, though visible compression and rebound clickers can be seen atop the fork tubes (similar to the setup on the 790 Adventure R). We expect that the spring rate and valving would also be updated for the bike’s more varied duties. The same goes for the rear suspension. The handlebar has a more upward bend, most likely to make the riding position better for when standing on the pegs – which are now aggressively teethed off-road items with rubber inserts as is standard on the larger Adventure models. Also in a move pointed towards off-road intentions, the grips receive hand guards. Given KTM’s performance-focused off-road pedigree, we would be surprised to see anything other than a 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear for a dual-purpose travel enduro. As is standard with the rest of the current 390 line-up, Metzler tires can be seen outfitted on the 390 Adventure in these spy shots. Excel rims are being used, though it’s difficult to tell whether the wee-ADV will use a tubeless set up or not. If we were gambling men, which our Canadian counterpart Dennis “Snake Eyes” Chung is, we would bet on tubeless. Identical to other 390 models’ braking components, the 390 Adventure uses a single rotor up front with a ByBre twin-piston caliper, similarly, the rear stopping power is provided by a single piston caliper and single disc. Both front and rear ABS rings are visible in these pictures. Looks like we may be heading back to Mexico sooner than later for another Wee-ADV shootout… Or perhaps somewhere more exotic… The post 2019 KTM 390 Adventure Spy Photos appeared first on Motorcycle.com. Motorcycle News - First Look At The 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R
https://ift.tt/2tINGJu As is the rest of the world, we at MO are excited to be one prototype closer to the U.S. release of the 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R. KTM chose the Sardinia, Italy stop of the KTM Adventure Rally June 20-22 to release a prototype version of the 790 Adventure R, piloted by none other than extreme enduro guru, Chris Birch. Chris rode the prototype for the duration of the rally and his quote is what we are all hoping for: “I’m honestly blown away by the new KTM 790 ADVENTURE R. Naturally, I’ve got a lot of experience on enduro bikes and the awesome ability of the big KTM ADVENTURE models, and this just feels like the perfect combination of them both.” The 799cc parallel-twin engine shared with the 790 Duke should be a fantastic engine for an off-road oriented bike, likely providing ample torque down low in the rpm-range and hopefully being tractable enough to spread that rich torque butter on smooth. Given KTM’s success off-road and in the adventure market, we are looking forward to a high performing middle class adventure bike that’s less intimidating than it’s 35-inch seat height having, 140-horsepower brethren. The press release below states the 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R has a 249-mile (400km) range from it’s low slung fuel tank which should contribute to a lighter feel given the lower center of gravity. A low seat height is also mentioned, which should make the middleweight ADV bike more accessible to a broader audience. After keeping tabs on Chris Birch’s Instagram, we felt we should share this walk around from the Italian Rally. If you’re on Instagram and you’re not following Chris Birch, you should probably get on that. KTM reports full details of the motorcycle will be unveiled at the global trade and consumer show EICMA on November 6 in Milan, Italy. We’ve heard mutterings that we should have a chance to test the bike this fall but are yet to have anything confirmed. Until then, visions of Tenere 700s versus 790 Adventure Rs will be roosting in our heads. Begin Press Release: 2019 KTM 790 Adventure RKTM chose its EUROPEAN ADVENTURE RALLY on June 20 as the event to provide an exclusive first look of the model year 2019 KTM 790 ADVENTURE R. The all-new parallel-twin powered ADVENTURE bike has been developed in tandem with KTM’s latest Dakar-winning weapon, the KTM 450 RALLY, to be the link between its enduro bikes and street range in 2019. The annual European event, this time hosted in Olbia, Sardinia, provided incredible on and offroad tours across three days of guided riding and tuition from KTM ambassadors and racers. Exclusive to just 150 places for like-minded KTM ADVENTURE owners only, the event sold-out extremely quickly and the lucky few made unforgettable memories and formed new friendships as they conquered the island’s incredible variety of sea view sandy trails, twisty mountain passes and even extreme offroad routes with unexplored terrain. With the bike inspired by the demand of its customers and dealers, it was some of these hardcore riders who were the first to see and hear up close an early, preproduction version of the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R. After the opening riding day of the event, the background and positioning of this exciting new bike was formally introduced to the assembled riders by KTM staff and also ridden at the event by Chris Birch – an eight times New Zealand Enduro champ, triple Roof of Africa winner and 2010 Red Bull Romaniacs laureate, among many other accolades. Made in the READY TO RACE style benefitting from KTM’s unrivaled offroad competition DNA, this is more than just the look of a rally bike; the lightweight KTM 790 ADVENTURE R will have the performance and purpose to back up this image. For enduro pilots who demand to go further than ever without ever taking the easy route or for adventure riders who desire to tackle the paths least explored, this will be a motorcycle to back-up the ambitious. After riding the bike, Chris Birch said: “I’m honestly blown away by the new KTM 790 ADVENTURE R. Naturally, I’ve got a lot of experience on enduro bikes and the awesome ability of the big KTM ADVENTURE models, and this just feels like the perfect combination of them both. Obviously, what I rode is still a prototype, but it´s looking in terrific shape. Can’t wait to ride the final product!” KTM PR Manager – Street, Luke Brackenbury, said at the event: “KTM listens to its customers and dealers throughout the world and the demand for a very hardcore, mid-capacity ADVENTURE bike was something that was repeatedly raised. Make no mistake, this new KTM will be the most performance-focused middleweight travel enduro on the market with a spec sheet to rival machines of a much bigger displacement.” For extreme travel enduro riding, the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R will be a street bike with serious offroad capabilities and unrivaled performance in its segment. Full details of the bike will be revealed at EICMA, Milan on November 6, 2018. KTM 790 ADVENTURE R HIGHLIGHTS:

Motorcycle News - How To Clean Leather Motorcycle Gear
https://ift.tt/2tDj5wO Motorcyclists and leather go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Seriously. Ask any motorcyclist what it was like when they bought their first leather jacket, and you may see grown men cry as they reminisce about the new leather smell and how, over time, the jacket came to fit them like a second skin. Unfortunately, riding in your favorite gear subjects it to bug impacts, dirt, and even rain, which all take away its luster. However, quality leather can last a rider many riding seasons and maintain that optimal balance between broken in factory new – if a few care procedures are followed. How To Clean Textile Motorcycle Gear Spot CleanRegular post-ride spot cleaning will prevent that colorful bug splat from becoming a permanent stain. The process is easy, too. Take a clean damp cloth, hold it over the dirt/bug/whatever, and let it soften a few seconds before you wipe it away. You may need to apply this technique a few times (each with a clean section of that soft cloth), but it will remove some remarkably messy impacts. If you do this frequently, you won’t need to do the major cleanings as often. When the time comes to do a more thorough cleaning, you should still begin with the spot clean. Smells and SaltEven with vented leathers, we’re going to sweat on hot days. That sweat can lead to two ills for our beloved leather gear. First, there’s the funk that can lurk on the liner material. Second, you can see sweat stains develop on places like the sleeves if you are a heavy sweater or ride in extremely hot conditions (like, say, at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway). These are both from the salt left behind by our perspiration. If you’re lucky, your leathers have a removable liner that can be washed. Otherwise, you’ll need to resort to chemical warfare. While many products exist, a large swath of riders counts on Anthony’s De-Salter. Anthony’s Leatherworks is a Southern California institution that has been repairing and restoring damaged leathers for years. The quality of their service has led them to handle warranty repairs for some major leather brands in the past. In recent years, they’ve marketed their own line of leather maintenance products that you’ll see in this article. Spray Anthony’s De-Salter on the exterior salt stains on the leather and rub it into the leather with a clean rag. For funky interiors, you turn the gear inside out if you can and spray the De-Salter liberally onto the lining and rub it in with a rag. Now, you need to hang up the item and let it dry completely. Shampoo your leather?Although we’ve heard stories of people washing their leathers by putting them on and taking a shower – complete with soap – we don’t recommend it. Instead, use a clean rag and a leather shampoo, like Anthony’s Easy Cleaner. Moisten the rag with Easy Cleaner and work it into any areas that have leftover spots/stains from the spot cleaning step. After that, apply it liberally to the exterior of the leather with the rag, switching to clean sections as the rag picks up dirt. Once you’re happy with the degree of cleaning, hang your gear up and let it dry completely. Conditioning – pay it forwardLeather is skin, and like our skin, it looks better when it’s moisturized. Additionally, moist, supple leather will do a better job of protecting you in a crash than dried, cracked leather. Just wearing your gear out on the road speeds the drying process. Cleaning your leather, even with quality products like Anthony’s Easy Cleaner, also dries out the natural fibers within the leather. So, you need to replenish the oils that keep leather looking good. Anthony’s One-Step Conditioner has the natural oils your gear is thirsty for. All you need to do is spray over your gear and then rub it into the leather with a sponge. (I like to work on one section at a time.) If you’ve neglected your leather, you may see the conditioner immediately soak into the leather, and you can spray more onto the sponge and wipe again. Once you’ve worked the conditioner into the entire garment, let it dry completely. When the garment is dry, you may notice a dull haze on the formerly glossy surface. You can bring back that luster by buffing the leather’s surface with a clean, soft cloth. That’s all you have to do to keep your leather riding gear looking – and smelling – good over the years that you wear it. If you want to learn more about the services that Anthony’s Leatherworks offers, visit the company’s website. There you can order all of the cleaners used in this article. The jacket shown in this article is the Rev’It Replica Jacket. The post How To Clean Leather Motorcycle Gear appeared first on Motorcycle.com. F1 News - Austrian Grand Prix: Load up the caravan & get ready for a big party
https://ift.tt/2N0XeZ0 "This is old school. I like it." Former world champion Jenson Button could have been talking about more than just the race track when asked about the Austrian Grand Prix. Surrounded by the lush, green Styrian mountains and a two-hour drive away from the capital Vienna, this is a weekend to put the stress of modern life behind you and enjoy the great outdoors. Or, more specifically, load up the caravan, pitch your tent with thousands of other fans and have the Formula 1 equivalent of a Glastonbury festival-style experience. Instead of champagne filled super-yachts or Instagram-filtered VIP lounges, Spielberg offers fans a chance to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Quite literally. The old Osterreichring, used in the 1970s and late 1980s, is open to walk around with a beer in one hand and a bosna - bratwurst sausage, onions and a blend of mustard or tomato ketchup with curry powder - in the other. But what would you talk about?Reminisce over the elation of a home win for Niki Lauda in 1984. With his gearbox slowly failing, the Austrian nursed his McLaren across the line and on the way to a third world championship. Lauda is still the only countryman to win in Spielberg. Gerhard Berger came close in 1994 with a second place finish but for now, it's a stat that won't be threatened anytime soon. Stroll across to the spot where Nigel Mansell executed a sublime pass on Williams team-mate Nelson Piquet to take victory in 1987. Then chuckle to yourself as you remember Murray Walker's firm examination of Mansell's bump on the head, after the Brit had smacked it on a steel girder while celebrating on the way to the podium. If you can do all that whilst wearing a bright orange Max Verstappen T-shirt, plus a helmet adorned with giant bull horns or antlers, then you will have earned your red and white Austrian stripes. The festival headlinerEvery festival needs a headliner and what better draw then the birthday of the happiest man on the grid: Daniel Ricciardo. Race day at the Red Bull Ring sees Ricciardo turn 29. The last year of your twenties can often feel like a time for reflection and change. Could an announcement about the Australian's future be on the cards after talks with McLaren and Renault were held? Probably not... but a party for the honey badger in a field full of raucous fans sounds like a race weekend to remember. Flashback quizMultiple winners is the focus of our quiz this week. Only six drivers have won the Austrian Grand Prix more than once since 1970, three being the highest number of victories.
